The Morning Star: A Novel Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from jack sherman -- our best living writer : Perhaps you--like I---will enjoy listening to, rather than reading, the massive number of pages this Norwegian writer has pumped out over the past few decades--as Eduardo Ballerini does a fantastic job--easily THE best audiobook reader I've ever heard. But I read this new book--and am glad I did. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from englishmajor -- The Morning Star shines in all too human lives : This is a good story about two days in late Summer in Norway and the strange things that begin to happen in the lives of the characters. There is a tremendous focus on the mystery of death. There is a sense that something life changing is beginning when the bright star appears in the sky. The characters are going about their lives mainly disappointing their families with some profound failures... a failure to be a Father, a failure to be a faithful husband, a failure to deal with a mentally ill wife and so on. These people lie to their loved ones and lie to themselves about what they are doing. They do not seem to be aware of the destructive damage they are inflicting; it is as if they feel that they have all the time in world but the strange star lights up the sky above them indicates that they do not. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul -- Think My Struggle meets Stephen King : I didn’t know really what to expect as the reviews I read prior didn’t reveal too much. It was like reading My Struggle and a long Stephen King novel. I’ll leave it at that. Can’t wait for the next in the series. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from shirley chapura -- Thought provoking! : Probably too long but certainly held my interest throughout! Hopefully there will be a continuation book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from carolee luberto -- Drivel : Oh please! Just 666 pages of nothingness. I would have like to have known more about what was going on but apparently this is prelude to ANOTHER long pretentious book. Don’t waste your valuable time or money. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Steven Grubbs -- The morning star is rising : What a great story. Knausgaard is a great author. Reading this book was such experience. I felt like I was present in the scenes. Such a magical and special story. I heard this is part one of a trilogy, if so I will be buying the other books so I can continue on this wonderful trip. Deals with death, religion, reality and change. Great characters that you won't forget. Keep up the great writing. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andy M -- His best work yet – IMO : I’ve read lots of Knausguaard and actually preferred his Seasons Quartet to ‘My Struggle’. His books keep getting better and I think he is growing as a person, in wisdom and also growing philosophically and spiritually. I enjoy his insights into life, the spiritual and mundane, most, but it’s great to have a story happening as well to keep you reading. The story seems a mix of Norwegian folk-tales, mythology, a bit of The Stand, current day apocalypse writing and most of all lots of exploring family and family responsibility. It’s the mundane and sublime on nearly every page. Loved it! Can’t wait for part 2. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eduardo -- Knaussgards new novel : Various personalised stories all pulled together around the mysterious appearance of a Morning Star ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mohammed Hamzaoui -- Fascinating : Often quite pulpy (some Jo Nesbo-ish / Jurassic Park-esque interludes) attempt to present an apocalyptic scenario in which humans, faced with the appearance of a new star in the sky, become subject to strange and malevolent forces, some of which merely exacerbate incipient ruin, others that punish eschatological indifference or a failure to accept the presence of wonder (or, if you prefer, 'God') in nature. The book asks: what do you believe, and why, and do you think it makes any difference? It also suggests that, if you believe in nothing, or a bespoke faux-reality, you'll be the among the first to suffer. ( Reviewed in Germany on October 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Read it for insights into his marriage, fails on too long disertations on religion and death : Cannot fault the passages obviously relating to his marriage to Linda. Stunning. At his best when avoiding existential questions which I found tedious and much too long. ( Reviewed in Australia on October 12, 2021 )
